How Chinese Law Firms Theaten Employees Who Expose Them

My law firm, after not paying me per its contract, has now started reading this blog, which discusses how they function (or don’t). Here we go…  Their reaction, copied below, is typical of how Chinese (law firms or the government) deal with dissent: threaten and malign, according to laws that don’t function here. I suppose I’d be bothered, too,  if nearly 15,000 people every day were reading about me–thanks for everyone for reading! Here’s the email I just received from the partner who owes me most of this money, and whose name is on the contract to pay me:sxu  to zhangxuebing, wanglihua
 Jeff,

I have seen your blog.  You are the biggest liar I have ever seen in my life.  You are seriously sick and need to see a doctor. By the way, I am not threatening you.   I am going to sue you - that is exactly what I am going to do, and I will sue you for a huge amount of damages.I will find you and will see you in court. If, as you said, the information is accurate, you have nothing to be afraid of.  So, tell me your address and I will have the court paper serve upon you immediately.   If you do not tell me your address, that means you know you are a liar and I will make sure that you will pay for it.   In any event, I will find you and fight against you to death!  This time, you have no way to escape!

Is there a lesson in this? I think it must be: avoid working for Chinese law firms if you want to be paid and if you want to preserve your sanity. Good luck, Shirley, with your lawsuit. There’s no point in suing me if I’m just publishing the truth.

In addtion, this is surely dramatic, unprecedented in the profession’s histroy here in China. That is, someone finally tells truth.

Thanks. I would appreciate it if you (or anyone) would call her, if only just to make the point that money doesn’t give you a ticket to malign people at will, in China or anywhere. I need to take threats like this seriously since Zhong Lun has money to do whatever it wants here in China, and Shirley Xu is a senior partner there.

Only in China….A law firm suing an ex-employee for comments made on a blog that is probably blocked in China…

One of the biggest divides between East and West is the difference between guilt based ethics and the shame based ethics traditionally used in Asia. In China one doesn’t feel guilt about being a thief, but is only concerned about being exposed as a thief and losing face. When the Chinese are confronted about their activities you will usually get a somewhat threatening rant such as the email you have received.

For those of you who are reading this blog and have no experiences with China I can tell you that everything here is familiar…Do you ever wonder how people making $500 / month are driving Porsche Cayenne’s in Beijing? The answer is in the pages of this blog.

I doubt they will sue you, they would be too embarrassed in court. But in a land without laws problems are solved by other means and I wouldn’t be surprised if you started to have some sort of peripheral problems soon.

I cannot believe they are using stolen software….such sadly typical behavior in China
